The Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge is a community hub in Calgary. Recreational opportunities abound at the facility’s skating rinks, swimming pools, climbing wall, dance studios and gymnasium. On-site daycare and an array of cultural zones such as art studios and gallery space, a performance theater and central library welcome visitors. 

The City of Calgary chose PCL to build the Shane Homes YMCA because of our extensive expertise and excellence in preconstruction, managing complex projects and Building Information Modelling (BIM) program. Our award-winning BIM Execution Plan laid out clash-detection and constructability planning, while an extensive mock-up and first-installation program ensured a quality product. 

Building this one-of-a-kind structure required a unique combination of cast-in-place foundations and structural steel supports, along with a glue-laminated fir timber roof. We created a construction-ready model from scratch, and the concrete, steel, and timber contractors then meticulously assembled and verified it. This process gave trade contractors confidence that they understood the state of the space they were getting and the condition in which they would turn it over to the scope following them. 

Community response to this marvel of architecture and construction, and world-class recreation facility, has exceeded even the YMCA’s expectations.
